tvordljThanks for everyone's concern :))) I'm at work and thanks to the network people we have internet access. We lost our power overnight Sunday and it's still off for over 100,000 in the province. that's down from 300,000 yesterday with everything shut down and no busses on the road. The busses are back today and downtown has power so i figured i'd be better off at work even though there's only about 1/3 of the staff here. Boredom and lack of hot caffeine was my motivation! Also i needed a working phone. I have a cordless and it doesn't work without power. I may try to borrow a spare from the office for a few days to have at home. Still cant' get in touch with my parents in Cole harbour though i've heard most of that still is black and the phones out there are very sporadic. Cell towers are twisted and broken.
The Public Gardens are destroyed, the waterfront is a wreck between the floods and the boardwalks in toothpicks. Windows are blown out, trees are down, big ones uprooted or stripped and tangled in downed power lines. I saw one small street where almost every tree was up rooted and laid over tangled in the power lines, with the power poles snapped. I saw a billboard that was bent over and twisted. One of the bridges is closed due to damage and the apartment building up the street was the one that lost a lot of it's roof. Our building seems to be unscathed though we lost a tree out front. Up our street a couple of trees down some power lines and at the other end of the street a transformer blew up.
Anyway I'm in one piece and have decided to stay in a hotel tonight so i can have a hot shower in the morning and tv to watch! This was a "class 1" hurricane, the lowest rating but man oh man it has devastated the area. We qualify for disaster relief from the Federal government and insurance claims will be plenty. I'm thinking of calling the insurance company to see about replacing the contents of the fridge which is very minor compared to some people.
