tvordljIt's the only time i really feel old. Not that i am you understand. But old enough to have a teenager if i did have kids. Times like this that bring out the "God(dess) save the earth if these kids are the people that are going to be running it when i'm even older and grayer. Drove an hour and a half to a funeral service for a friend's father today, arrived early so we went to lunch first.
Lovely old building, patio out in the hot sun. We ordered bowls of chowder and a drink. The waitress was maybe 17 if that. She didn't even appear the first 10 minutes. The soup took awhile to come. When it did she asked if we wanted dinner rolls. Er.. yes please. Off she went as we unfurled our napkins to discover.... a fork and knife! When she came back (no butter for the rolls, the chef is still looking for it), i gestured to her with the offending cutlery and mimed cutting over my soup bowl. The light went on. Ohhhhh you want a spoon. My friend and i looked at each other, and nodded wordlessly. wordlessly because we would either burst out laughing or crying, we weren't sure which. Back she came... with a dessert spoon not a soup spoon. No butter, no drinks.
We finished our soup when she finally came back with the butter, oh you've already finished she muttered. We'll take our drinks inside the lounge please as it's getting a bit hot. In we went and she came over. What would you like. We reordered what we had already. Light goes on again. Oh i forgot didn't i? We just looked sideways at her. And could we have the bill as well because we'll have to leave soon. She brought it and had to double check she brought the right one and apologized becuase she's been run off her feet, being the only one there today. We looked around. You could have shot a cannon through the place and not hit anything or anyone substantial. Josephine's remark was "And i thought *I* sucked as a waitress!"
No tip was forthcoming.
*sigh* i have to say it... kids today! And it's my generation that's bringing them up this way! I'm sure i had more about me at that age.
