Day one of the A+ Cert. course done and dusted. Quite a lot of information yesterday. We will get more hands on starting today. I think i'm going to get a lot out of this. It's nice being not in the office, too. I can just go on a later bus and go straight to the training company, which is still only just across the street from work. I bagged a seat by the window which means it's a little chilly but the view over the parade square is nice.

Elton John is coming ! I don't know if i'm going to be able to get tickets though because i'm on this course. I don't think i can morally use their internet to do something like that while i'm supposed to be on course and by that time the computer might be in bits anyway. Also, i was looking at the seating chart for the concert. The 100 dollar tickets being sold are almost all behind the stage!!! All the rest are 149 plus fees and tax. Sheesh! He's playing two nights and they expect a sellout in minutes.

I'm not a major Mozart fan but I've had a few bars of it running around in my head all morning. I *think* it's from the Magic Flute but unless you're familiar with it and i could "sing" it for you, there's no way of guessing. I did check a couple of sound clips on Amazon but i didn't find it. Anyway, my ride picked me up and we headed out to Bedford for our ping committee meeting this afternoon and there was a classical cd in the player in the car. Not Mozart but it sparked a conversation about classical music and i mentioned the clip. On the way home, later in the same cd, a familiar tune started up. No, not the tune i'd been ear-worming, but something equally well known, the Allegro from Eine kleine Nachtmusik. You'd recognize it if you heard it. And naturally the conversation turned to Mozart and the movie, Amadeus, which i have on dvd and have now had to put on to watch again. Fan or not, it really is a wonderful movie. Mozart really was the pop superstar of his day and behaved nearly as badly as the ones today do!

Went to work today, felt well enough to go in though still can't put my head back too far without a "swoon" of lightheadedness. Sat in on the second day of the CSS course which was ok, but still pretty basic stuff. I imagine, though, if we take the advanced course, that will be even more useful. All of us have had at least some exposure to CSS so it was a bit of a doddle most of the time. Also got me flu jab so that's done with for another year. Also, my vacation time for Chirstmas was approved so i'm off between the 20th until the New Year though i still have to go in to work on the afternoon of the 20th for the cookie exchange :) Cooookeeeeee!

Listening to the newest Evanescence cd, downloaded the various songs. Two of them were borked so i'll have to find them again but the rest so far are not bad. A lot of it is fairly same-y to the first CD though, isn't it? A couple of nice, crunchy songs but I still love Bring Me To Life from the first CD quite a lot. Also downloaded some Fab Gadget after seeing some video that [livejournal.com profile] zoo_music_girl featured last week or so and found a few tunes i quite liked. I wouldn't have thought i'd have liked them but they really grow on me.

Your Song
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin, Music by Elton John
That has got to be one of the world's perfect songs.
Sir Elton was on Inside the Actor's Studio, a rebroadcast from 2005 and he played it live, there on the stage.
My eyes welled up, i admit it. I think, at least for that song, his voice as it is now, deeper than it was when he first recorded it 30 years ago or so, makes that song even better for me. The camera panned the audience and i saw a more than a few tears on cheeks. I've seen the Rolling Stones live, I've seen a Beatle, I think if i ever get to see Elton, my list of legends will be complete barring Queen and without Freddie, it wouldn't be the same.

On the Bus

Got on the bus this morning and did a double take. Woman sitting across from me was cuddling a bunny rabbit in her arms! mostly white with black around one eye and his/her ears were black too. She mostly had it wrapped in a towel and was nuzzling it's head and even kissing it on the face. I don't know where she was taking it this early in the morning but perhaps to the vet?

Very foggy last night and this morning. Love it. Then when it starts to rain, the fog will lift a bit and it'll just be dreary and dark and wet.

Anyone local who's going to the concert this weekend, check out the Metro transit special routes and schedules. They have a fleet of shuttle busses from four locations to downtown areas. Naturally the one i would have to take stops at Scotia Square which means climbing uphill to the Commons and then have to walk around the other side to get to the entrances. Sheesh. I'm actually thinking of taking a regular city bus that goes up North street and then walk a few blocks over. Probably less crowded than the shuttles too. Going home is different. All downhill to the shuttle and they'll have them running until 1:30 a.m. They aren't free, it's $2.00 cash only, no tickets or passes. If you can manage to get on the last bus of the regular routes, you can use your usual tickets and passes, it's only the shuttles that are cash only. Ferry (Dartmouth and Woodside) running until 1:30 as well. The shuttle will get me home as far as Highfield terminal but Tracey lives right there so she can always run me up to my place in the car.

Wonder if i dare try to smuggle in a camera? Rumour has it they will be searching bags and jackets. Possibly i can fit my digital camera in my jeans pocket. I suppose i'll be too far away from the stage anyway and the only photos will be of the video screens LOL! I also plan to carry money and id in my pockets. I don't really want to have to deal with a purse though i do have a small almost wallet size one i can wear across my body or adjust and wear around my waist. Pockets are probably safer.

So that's it for my first and last reality show :) It reminds me of why i hate Bingo so much. I get my hopes all built up and then lose. My favourite Magni didn't even get into the last show tonight (what happened there? not even an announcement that he was the low voter or having him on stage when they eliminated him. Nothing was shown on last night's show on my screen. Was it on yours?) aside from flashbacks and the other one i thought was a front runner, Toby, was unceremoniously dropped. Down to Dilana and Lukas. We didn't even get a final sing-off ... What gets me is Lukas and Dilana were all huggy and warm and fuzzy and it's been clear all along everyone hated Lukas's guts! Including me! So naturally who gets to be the new singer? Fucking Lukas! (does his hair remind you all of a skunk?) The only good thing, though, is that's two for two for Canada! (INXS has a local Nova Scotia boy as their lead) It's too bad, of those final two, i think Dilana would have sounded a lot better.

Oh well. They all got paid well for the whole show from what i've heard. Got gifts (guitars and a couple of them got new cars). No doubt the winner gets a pretty lucrative (even if it's going to be short) contract. It's only a McGroup anyway. See you next summer, that's what the host said! Gahhhh they're going to do it again! Someone give me a sharp stick!

1. Do you work hard or do you take the easy way out?
Generally try to find the easiest way around it. Most IT Programmers tend to do that. Why make more work for yourself?

2. How's your day going?
Ok. Quietish.

3. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
counting all types of footwear, probably more than i think i have but i'll guess at a dozen.

4. Do you consider yourself cool?
Sometimes i guess. Not in with the "cool" crowd or trendsetters but i'm a very cool auntie and i do have my moments.

5. What's the last song you listened to?
Haven't had any music on since Monday i think and i can't remember the last song there.

Speaking of songs, one of the local radio stations that has been limping along with various types of formats has changed to FM and is playing all classic rock and it's a pretty good station. Seems to be hitting at least a 90% approval rating from me, i.e. i like about 90% of the stuff they play over all. The problem with "oldies" stations is that they usually don't play the oldies songs i like, and instead trot out all the tired same-old-same-old tunes. This station, so far, seems to be picking good stuff, B-sides, other album cuts etc. I have picked up the occasional tired moldy oldy like Born to be Wild which is probably the most overused and cliche song evah these days, now that it's in every movie, every tv commercial gahhhh....
I digress...
Anyway, the station used to be CHNS on the AM band and it's now HAL FM at 89.9 on the FM band though i think the call letters are still CHNS. The website is crap as far as shedules, who's the DJ and what, if any, shows they have on, but it has a Listen Live thing. I don't know if they will have any themed shows or hours at all, and i've emailed once or twice and they've never sent even an acknowledgement which is poor PR. I should ring them sometime.

Anyone watching Rockstar Supernova?
Anyone think they *all* sound the same?
None of them can hold a tune in a bucket.
Most of the shriek and scream and flail about on the stage in an effort to "ramp it up" .
And the rock star judges? They like everyone pretty much. Hardly any harsh words when some of them very justly deserve it.
"You can't effing sing!"
*sigh*
Why am i watching this crap?

They've announced the fourth and i think, final, act for the Stones concert. A rapper called Kanye West. Never heard of him. My niece and cousins, however, ooohed and ahhed at the announcement. They were quite excited. I think i'll bring a book ;)))) I don't know who's on first ( what's on second, i don't know... third base *snork* sorry... as you were) if i knew he was the first act up , i'd consider coming a bit later but i suppose getting a good spot is a priority. We'll see closer to the date.

And the weekly Friday Five

1. When is the last time your phone rang in the middle of the night?
A few weeks ago. Mom called.

2. Who makes you yell?
Not much. I yell at concerts though. cheer and whoop. Does that count?

3. What do you do for fun?
paint, travel, wander around the city taking in the crowds and shopping.

4. What hours do you work/go to school?
7:30 - 4:00 Monday to Friday

5. Who is number one in your life?

We've finally got some sunshine and clear blue skies!!! I think it must have been the worst week for weather in April i've experienced in ages. But that's fairly normal i think. You can experience all four seasons in a week! Lovely blue skies yesterday and today though quite high winds yesterday. I did a bit of shopping for a new spring coat. I have one that's a sort of nylon but it's heavy like leather but it's not real leather or like fake leather because it isn't shiny like that. Anyway. The collar is all cracked and it's getting kind of ratty looking. The other one is an old cloth one i really don't like. I found one that fit me though it's a bit dressier than i would normally pick but it is quite nice. Almost knee length, black cloth, with a collar and a button on hood with white top stitching around the cuffs and collar and actually it looks kind of nice because it's not overdone. Won't be waterproof like my nylon one so i don't suppose i will be retiring that one just yet. I also went into the men's big and tall store to get a couple of plain basic tshirts. I can get tshirts in the large size ladies' stores but they aren't really long enough or full enough for the gym and my old tshirt that i used for the gym is stained and just manky! I got a couple of v-neck shirts for 20 dollars each and they're quite comfy. I tried a larger size on but though it was find, the top part was just too huge around my shoulders and chest. I may have big boobs but my shoulder area is definitely not broad like a man's. I even threw out my old tshirt in the bin in the locker room at the gym yesterday too so i wouldn't be tempted to keep it for "just around the house". I do like it because of the logo on it which is the same as on this icon and promotes the beauty in us women who are built for comfort and not for speed ;) I'll have to make do with just the icon now.

Today i took my bucket and put a little elbow grease into the squeegee and cleaned my living room/balcony doors and windows. What a difference!! The winter grunge is gone and even though there are one or two streaks, it's so much nicer to see out through clear glass! Laundry is in the dryer and i've just had something to eat.

[livejournal.com profile] gramie_dee is off to see War of the Worlds performed at the MEN arena in Manchester tonight with some of our friends so i will be waiting to hear a complete review about that. I'm sure he'll post his review on LJ tomorrow. Hmm that reminds me. Alice Cooper is playing here in a couple of weeks, May 3 i think, and he wants me to write a review of the concert as well. I know i won't remember all the playlist but he said that won't matter. I guess i'll give it a go!

Note to self.
Buy hair dye.
Java geeking is making my hair grey.

Beautiful day. sunny and warm. Downtown is starting to hot up in other ways too, getting ready to host the Canadian music industry awards, the Junos this weekend. Lots of stuff going on around town including an outdoor concert by various bands after work tomorrow from 5:30 to 11 in the Grand Parade square. Most seem to be east coast artists in that one. Most of them i've heard of but have no idea what they sing. (The Trews, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Matt Mason (son of blues artist Dutch Mason), Jimmy Rankin whom i do know. I thought about going to see some of it but the crowds always put me off. I'll probably go to the gym after work instead. Might be less of a crowd !

My friend Tracey's birthday today :) She's going to be a volunteer seat filler at the Junos. If anyone gets up to pick up an award or goes to the toilet, she's one of the ones that sits in their seat so that when the camera pans the audience, there is not an empty seat showing. She says that so far, volunteering has cost her $140 for some new clothes. She was told "Rock casual" but that doesn't mean jeans and a tshirt.

On a more interesting note, i got an email from a freelance writer week before last. She is writing an article on Coronation Street for Reader's Digest. She saw my webpage about the celeb visit to Halifax this year and emailed me. She first thought she might want to use some of the quotes and also wanted to talk to me about the fan base in Halifax. She was in England at the time and did get to interview a few of the actors including two that had come to Canada and Halifax in the past couple of years so in the end, she emailed me with some questions and asked if i could send a couple of pictures. Thus i sent her a long email and a couple of photos that she said would be credited to me. I hope she tells me when it will be published though i don't expect it for a few months. It's not about *me*, and of all the stuff i emailed her, i'll probably be lucky if she uses a sentence. Doesn't matter though. :)))

Another day of rain lashing down.
It was the autumn Corrie "ping" (aka fan club gathering) of about 120 at a local pub/restaurant. Won a little fridge magnet that a friend had made and i'm going to go find some of that magnetic stuff, a sheet of it you can get with an adhesive side and then you print a picture on photo paper and put it together. I want to make some. I'll have to have a look through my photos and see what might make some nice little magnets.

We had a look around the flea market too. My friend picked up a lot of craft magazines but i didn't see anything that jumped off the table and screamed Buy Me!

Dad's not that good today, he's still anxious and agitated. Worried about everything. It's hard to see him like that. He is allowed Ativan which is a sort of Valium if he wants it but he won't ask for it. He says it comes and goes and you can't get him to understand that if he takes one, it won't come.

As to that post from yesterday, about Bauhaus songs, i found most of the ones people mentioned and i found a live version of Passion of Lovers which i did like but i still like that industrial remix better. [livejournal.com profile] naturalbornkaos is certain that isn't Bauhaus but there was a cover cd out, called the Passion of Covers and that was done by The Shroud. I haven't been able to find it under their name on P2P but it could be that. S'good though. I find that the Bauhaus are mostly a bit too "punk" for me. That's the only way i know how to describe it. I do like the Ziggy cover, Dark Entries, Kick in the Eye, She's In Parties and i think i liked Sanity Assassin. Those were the ones i've kept in my music folder anyway. Couldn't get hold of any Peter Murphy or Tones on Tail or David J today. I have them noted though and will try again. Thanks though, for the suggestions! I think i'll see if i can find some more Love and Rockets too. I have about a half dozen of those if they're all *really* L&R lol After finding out yesterday that several really weren't, unsurprisingly, i'm dubious lol
tvordlj: (Punk)
Seeing as quite a few people on my flist are looking forward to a gig by the Bauhaus (forgive me if that should just be Bauhaus ... what do i know? LOL) Anyway, i decided to download a few tunes to see what they were like. Hard to know what to pick so i just went by titles that i liked. Of the ones i tried, i liked about half and one of my favourites is an industrial mix of Passion of Lovers. [livejournal.com profile] naturalbornkaos it reminds me a little of some of the industrial mix stuff you did a few years ago, or reminiscent of it anyway. Anyway i liked that one. Also kind of liked the cover of Ziggy Stardust but really hated a cover of Spirit in the Sky and also disliked Of Lilies and Remains, Dancing. Also liked Sanity Assassin, Theme from the Lost Boys (soundtrack) and All In My Mind. Another song that was tagged as Bauhaus appears to actually be Love and Rockets "Holy Fool" but i like it. The ones i didn't like i found a bit too punk. That's the only way i can describe it.

So the question is... what other Bauhaus tracks can i try that i might like given the list of the ones i like? Anything else to suggest? (i do this about once a year and usually manage to get a handful of new tracks and artists that i quite like!

Now there's a CD i haven't played in ages!!! (Afghan Whigs). I was looking for the one i have by the Irish Celtic Band, Planxty and i found this. And i do love this cd. It was originally described to me as music that starts off "evening" and finishes "late night" and that describes it perfectly.

I may have sold a painting to someone that isn't family! :D I painted a larger version of a Corrie themed photo, one i'd painted as a 5x7 originally. There was another one i did around the same time that i sold to the prize patrol for a raffle at the corrie get togethers i go to (for cost) and the woman that won it always wanted the other one which wasn't for sale at the time. She said if i was ever to sell it to give her first chance. Well since i've done another one, larger, for myself, i emailed her and told her i'd ask $25 for it. I hope that isn't too much but it did take a bit of time and effort. Link to the painting. I haven't heard back from her but i only just replied to her email when i got home from work. I think 25 is reasonable for a 5x7 and probably could get more but i just feel that's pushing it. Mom bought a small one from me for that and thought it was well worth it.

Misheard Lyrics

The site, Am I Right and also Kiss This Guy are the sites for "misheard" lyrics. The best one i know personally is one my sister, [livejournal.com profile] sammantha misheard years ago in the early 80's. A group of us were out and singing loudly to the car radio. When we got home, i heard her pootling about the house singing lightly "Greaseface! Greaseface!". Huh? Turns out that's what she thought they were singing in J. Geils Band's Freezeframe! I went to the "Am I Right" site and found the following misheard lyrics for the same thing which have me in fits this morning.

Breeze Way
Cheese face (!!!)
Flea Spray
Freeze brain
Freeze train
Sea spray
Squeeze play

Any particularly good ones you've heard yourself or personally know of?

OKA, a trio from Australia are playing at the Panhandler Buskerfest and luckily i happened upon them 5 minutes before a show. One of the songs on their newer cd is the title of this post and also the title of the cd. They played it, combined with another song i think, techno percussion and sounds mixed with Native American flute, Yadakie (aka didgeridoo), a traditional log drum, and some vocals echoing down the didge. Fantastic! I bought a cd last year and bought another one this year. They sold quite a few i think during that hour playing in the sun.

Matt and Stu
Chris on flute

The waterfront was jam packed though, buskermania has barely begun. ERghhh the crowds are even worse on the weekends and later in the evenings. Ah well, i guess we should be glad it's bringing the tourists in and money into the economy. Funny, i didn't mind the crowds around the Tall Ships nearly as much. This one guy, Silver Elvis was cute. Two buckets at his feet said "Cash activated" and if you tossed a coin in a bucket he'd move around and "robot" dance to taped music.

I went on a photo quest after work, to find the last four "Lobsters in the City" for which i will probably manage to get photos. Two right in the mall, one in the Metro Center box office made of all beer caps and one more at the Brewery Market. Full gallery of my photos (plus i think one or two that i didn't actually take) here.

Another hot perfect summer day. Sunny, breezy. It's cool in my apartment and i've got a cuppa and some watermelon. I'm ready for the weekend. :)

Jim Clench, Brian Greenway, Jerry Mercer, Myles Goodwin... If you've been a fan of Canadian rock music over the last 20 or 30 years , those names will be as familiar to you as the back of your hand. April Wine. A local band made good. Very good. they were right up there on the Canadian charts in the 70's and early 80's along with the Guess Who, Loverboy, Trooper and Bachman Turner Overdrive. For four men in their 50's and 60's, oh baby can they fuckin' rock! They look older, they might not leap about the stage like they used to but after oh so familiar vocals, blistering guitar solos and one amazing heart pounding ear bashing drum solo, they still got it! I was shocked to hear that the drummer, Jerry Mercer, was 66 after hearing and seeing the drum solo tonight. And FYI Jerry Mercer's beard might be snow white but his arms are still the size of tree trunks. They did all the songs you know, and kept ratcheting it up higher and higher, louder and more intense. By half way through, it wasn't even cold anymore. You just didn't notice the damp ocean breeze that was making you shake and shiver through the two opening acts. In contrast, the encore was actually knocked down in pace to start with. After a chat about diabetes because Myles' young son has just been diagnosed with Type I, they started into a slow song that built up to a rockin chorus. Then they launched into a long mostly instrumental version of "It's My Life" (or something like that) which featured both lead guitarists and the bass player trading off solo pieces while Jerry kept pace. Bluesy rock. hot and smoky. But you knew it was coming...

That cowbell intro to....... OOOOOOH Whadda Night! To end it all off they gave the crowd what they were waiting for and nobody went away disappointed. My ears are ringing and my voice is hoarse. They're as good as they ever were and in this venue, i think they sound even better than the last time i heard them about 20 years ago or so at the Metro Center. This was an outdoor stage on the Dartmouth waterfront and i heard they had sold about 1500 tickets. There were a lot of plastic patio chairs out but by the time April Wine hit the stage, there was also a lot of people standing. Not standing still, you understand. But on their feet.

The opening act was called Never. We had fun with that. Never heard of them, Never thought they'd leave the stage... etc. Oh they weren't bad, they were having a lot of fun and they put a lot into their hour long performance. They certainly had their fans, mostly screaming females with flesh sagging out over the tops of tight jeans and skirts and short tops. One or two had me and [livejournal.com profile] psychfringe judging that they couldn't be living at home because their mother wouldn't have let them out of the house looking like that, and for damn sure their fathers would have barred the door lol One chick had a short skirt and some kind of top on. But remember that "big bar hair" of the late 80's when line dancing was all the rage? Yep, she's not changed her do in 15 years and boy when she strutted her stuff in that skirt you could tell she thought she was all that! *snort*

Second act up was another 70's local rock band, Snakeye who saw fit to confirm that yes, their band was named after some chick's boyfriend's penis. He said that. Twice. Like we couldn't all figure that out lol They were ok. I don't really remember them that well. They ended up their shorter set with a disco medly of K.C. and the Sunshine Band and a really bad version of Billy Ocean's Caribbean Queen. Never mind. They weren't on stage long.

Myles and company were hot tonight. Both of the other bands probably felt like burning their instruments when they heard these guys lay on the strings and skins. I know just looking at the drum kits they used, sat on stage in front of this tarped-over *huge* set back stage, yeah, i wanna be *that* when i grow up lol

To top it all off, well, to begin the night, i didn't have a ticket and planned on getting one at the door. 13 dollars. Cheap at twice the price. But my friends were talking to a guy in the line for ticket holders and he had a spare he "scalped" to me for 10, which was the original price. Only he was a lousy scalper because he actually paid 11.50 for it LOL that's the tax i guess.

There's been a revival of the old Canadian rock and pop bands from the 70's and 80's lately. This weekend is particularly rife with them. Snakeye and April Wine are playing tonight (Good. God. Myles Goodwin is 57!!! logically he would have to be. I was listening to them in the mid-late 70's as a teenager but Key-RIST that makes me feel ancient!) Loverboy and Trooper are playing the Casino over the weekend (Hey, [livejournal.com profile] kazza_ shall i go down and give them your regards? LOL Photo of Loverboy, they don't look half bad in a 40 something kinda way. I bet you'd still fancy one or two of them now that your tastes and their looks have er.. matured ;) /ducks ) A quote from the music director of the local hard/classic rock radio station, Q104 aka the Q-Zoo, J.D. Roberts says that though he was a teen in the 80's, he and his friends were discovering the "more substantial music of the 60's", realizing that the 80's music wasn't that great. (sorry to you 80's fans!) Lemme tell ya, there was a lot of drek in the 70's too when the radio was my best friend. Each decade has it's shining moments but maybe it's me getting old but there are fewer and fewer of them. I think so much of it all sounds the same, at least the stuff that makes it to the radio. I'm forever grateful to those of you in LJ-land that have guided me to the light and shown me that there is still hope ;) You know who you are.

Having said that, if the weather improves (it's pissing down at the moment), i think i will probably submit to nostalgia and take in the April Wine concert. They were great rockers back in the day. One of my favourites.

Guess who else are coming to Halifax? (edited: Dr. Hook and CCR are going to be in Truro for an outdoor concert on July 29) Dr. Hook (What a larf!), CCR (reminds me of skating at the old Dartmouth rink) and a Queen tribute band (*spit* if it ain't the real thing, STFU! i never could see the point of tribute bands especially one covering Queen!) Creedence might be ok but i doubt i'll bother. On the other hand, my mother is all a dither because Julio Iglesias is coming to the Metro Center! She went with two friends to NYC last fall to a concert to see him at Radio City Music Hall! That had to be far more fun than seeing him in the Metro Center cause it's like,.... Noo Yawk! :) She walked and shopped until she literally dropped lol!

I'm sort of still wishing i'd tried to get tickets for the Stones in Moncton but it really would have been such a pain in the ass otherwise, getting there, slogging through the traffic, 70,000 people milling around. If there's another tour down the road, maybe i'll spring for one of those packages to Toronto to see them in the SkyDome or Air Canada center or wherever it is they play.
