The HR department puts on Wellness seminars regularly and i just went to one today on menopause. It probably could have been longer because there was no time for questions which might have been helpful but there was a lot of good information on what happens, why, what you could expect and some of the things you can do to help yourself. Specifically calcium and vitamin D intake and exercise, those were the things they emphasized the most. 3 times a week, 30-60 minutes is recommended, though you can break it up in shorter bursts instead of all at once. I guess i better get my patootie back to the gym :) In fact, i'm off tomorrow so maybe i'll do it.

Dad got along ok with his throat stretching procedure though it was later in the afternoon he had it and was late getting back to the hospital where he's been because the ambulances were busy. The lump right in front of his throat that he thought he had was actually bone. They didn't take out the other one in his neck so i guess that's going to be all part of however they end up dealing with the whole issue. He is still scheduled to have the voice restoring procedure tomorrow. Sis and i are going to go see him when i get off work today.

Tell me more about the menopause info.
I am fine with regards to calcium, but don't know about vitamin D.

for someone our age, they recomment 1000-1500 mg of calcium a day, that is the elemental calcium that's actually absorbed, in addition to 400-800 iu (international? units) of vitamin D which helps absorb the calcium better. You can get most of that from a multivitamin pill.

They talked about options such as hormone replacement therapy, herbal and soy intake, but cautioned that some herbs can counteract some meds and you should stop taking the herbal supplements a week or so before any surgery as some of them can make you bleed more.

You are considered menopausal if you haven't had a period in a year but if you start bleeding after that after sex you should see about it. I would be considered perimenopausal because i haven't stopped altogether yet. Memory loss is ok, you don't have to worry if you forget where you put your keys, only worry if you forget what the keys are for or what you do with them :)
